MOTO-ST GENERAL CONCEPT

NOTE: The following was the initial concept statement to announce our plans for this new series and to give a taste or flavor of what it would be like. Since this was first posted, the rules have been written, the eligible equipment list has been refined, and entries for Daytona have been mailed. A better source of current info can be found on the Forms or Rules pages of this web site.

OVERVIEW

MOTO-ST is for production based four-stroke twin cylinder motorcycles, ridden by teams of rider’s in longer distance events. Rules enforcement will involve straight-forward parameters including machine weight and engine output, as monitored by the official series Dynojet Dynamometer.

EVENTS & SANCTIONING

Professional Motorsports Productions (PMP) will sanction both the series and the race events. The Grand American Road Racing Association (Grand-Am) will organize the series.

Race lengths will typically be announced in segments of time, such as 3 hours or 6 hours. Where distance is announced, such as 500 miles, a time limit will be imposed. This would result in an announcement of 500 miles or 6 hours, whichever came first. Maximum race length through 11-1-2007 is 8 hours.

TEAMS

Teams will be formed by an entrant who is not required to participate as a rider. Competition numbers will be issued to the entrant for a specific serial numbered motorcycle. The motorcycle may not be changed during a season unless damaged beyond repair. The team must have a minimum of 2 riders and a maximum of 3 riders in any event.

Riders must have a minimum of one year of road race competition and be members of Grand-Am. Riders must be licensed and in good standing with one of the recognized North American road racing organizations or the FIM.

CLASSES

Motorcycles are classified by weight and horsepower, as measured on the Official Dyno Jet Dyno. Makes and models not listed below may be presented for consideration for the inaugural race and season.

SuperSport Twins – SST

SST motorcycles must produce at least 90 horsepower and no more than 118 horsepower as measured on the official Dynojet Dyno in post race testing. Unless otherwise stated, minimum post race weight will be 400 pounds without the addition of fluids or ballast of any kind.

GrandSport Twins – GST

GST motorcycles must produce at least 75 horsepower and no more than 90 horsepower as measured on the official Dynojet Dyno in post race testing. Unless otherwise stated, minimum post race weight will be 390 pounds without the addition of fluids or ballast of any kind.

Sport Twins - ST

ST motorcycles may not produce more than 75 horsepower as measured on the official Dynojet Dyno in post race testing. Unless otherwise stated, minimum post race weight will be 400 pounds without the addition of fluids or ballast of any kind.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

If needed, specific motorcycle brands or models may be allowed deviations from the standard rules via a Technical Information Form. The purpose of such deviation will be to allow competitive participation by machines which may be lower or higher in performance than the published class standards. Unless superseded by requirements of a Technical Information Form, all motorcycles must meet the following equipment standards:

Standard safety regulations will be in effect in terms of preparation, including lock wire and the removal of unnecessary street equipment.

An oil retaining lower fairing must be added.

Front fender, fuel tank, and tail section bodywork must be stock or exact cosmetic duplicates of the original equipment pieces.

Fairings may be added or replaced at the discretion of the entrant.

For events running past sundown, the stock Original Equipment (OE) headlight and tail light must be utilized, although aftermarket bulbs can be fitted. Brake lights must be disconnected.

Frames may not be modified, with the exception of the removal of brackets for stands or reinforcement of fairing mounts and steering stops.

The stock front fork must be used, but aftermarket internals are allowed with a maximum cartridge size. Stock triple clamps must be used. Steering dampers and fork braces may be fitted.

The rear swing arm must be stock, but aftermarket shock absorbers and shock linkages may be fitted. An aftermarket, racing type sub frame can be used.

Brake calipers must remain stock; steel braided lines and aftermarket brake pads are permitted. Aftermarket brake rotors, of OE diameter, may be fitted, as long as no modifications to the calipers or their mounts are required.

Levers, hand controls, bars, master cylinders and foot peg/control assemblies can be replaced with lighter, more substantial aftermarket race designed items.

OE stock wheels must be used, of 17 inches in diameter. Limited modifications to stock wheel mounting, axle and caliper installation components will be allowed to speed wheel changes.

Engines must use OE/stock-based components for cases, cylinders, heads and induction.

An airbox must be fitted, but it does not have to be OE; filters are not required.

Aftermarket jetting and fuel injection tuning equipment (Power Commander) is permitted.

Final drive system, if not by chain, may be modified to chain type. Quick shifters are not permitted.

Electric starters must be retained, and operative at all times, in conjunction with the stock charging system. An OE sized battery must be fitted.

Aftermarket exhaust systems can be utilized, but must meet noise restrictions (if any are imposed). Machines suffering exhaust damage will be required to effect repairs before continuing during an event.

The stock fuel tank, unmodified, must be used, with either the stock filler neck opening or the fittings required for a dry brake fuel system. The cap may be changed or modified to eliminate the key/locking feature.

Maximum fuel capacity will be four (4) gallons.

Each entry must carry the motorcycle’s brand ID at a specified size and in an approved location on the fuel tank.

TIRES

Pirelli will be the sole supplier of tires for the MOTO-ST series through 11-1-2007.

FUEL

Sunoco will be the sole supplier of GT Unleaded fuel for the MOTO-ST series through 11-1-2007.

EVENT OPERATIONS

Timed practice will determine the starting grid, which will be set up in rows of two with separate rolling starts for each class.

Safety car procedures will be in place for full-course caution periods, and the highest-placed lapped motorcycles in both classes will be allowed to make up one lap during any full-course caution.

Scoring will be handled by transponders, giving teams on pit road instant and complete information on their status.

Two-way radio communication between riders and their crews will be allowed and encouraged.

Rolling starts will be used to restart races after full course caution periods, with riders in single file.

PRIZES AND AWARDS

Trophies will be awarded to the entrant of the top three finishing motorcycles in each class.

Medals will be awarded to the riders of the top three finishing motorcycles in each class.

Points will be awarded to the top 30 motorcycles in each class.

Purse awards will be posted for each event with awards to lap leaders in all classes, top 25 overall finishing teams, and bonuses for the podium finishers in GST and ST. Purse amounts will range from $25,000.00 to $100,000.00, depending upon the length of the race. Final purse paying position will always be at least equal to the entry fee for the race event.

FEES

Team registration fee will be $50.00, paid with first entry of the season.

Grand-Am membership is $65.00 for one season.

Team entry fees will typically be $500.00 per race, except for the 8 Hours At Daytons.

Gate fees will be determined by the event promoters.
