The Inaugural SunTrust MOTO-ST Event Ruled a Great Success by Riders, Fans and Sponsors

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (November
22, 2006) -- First time events quite often draw numerous
criticisms, but not so for the Inaugural SunTrust MOTO-ST Series
race held Saturday, October 21 at Daytona International
Speedway. The reviews for this first time two-wheel professional
endurance series were outstanding from the minute registration
opened to the very end of the 8 Hours At Daytona.
Boasting riders and teams from all over the United States,
Canada, Europe and Australia, the inaugural SunTrust MOTO-ST
race exceeded all expectations. "This was definitely an awesome
world class event," said two-time World Endurance Champion
Warwick Nowland, who was part of the BMW Motorcycles of Daytona
team. "The only thing that would have made it better was if we
had won. Despite a couple of mistakes that took us out of
contention for the victory, it was a great race and I definitely
want to return and contest the entire series next season."
"The action was spectacular," said one very pleased fan. "And
the autograph session with all the competitors and some other
special guests was the best. It is the first time that I have
ever been able to meet all the riders at an event. Everyone got
an event poster and a special commemorative autograph card to
get signed. It was really first class and something I will
remember forever."
With $100,000 in prize and lap money on the line, riders
thundered off the start ready to show their skill on the famed
3.56-mile Daytona International Speedway track.
"This is a track everyone should ride at least once in their
lifetime," explains Chris Ulrich, a member of the well-known M4
EMGO Suzuki team, which took second overall. "It is definitely
intense and a great place to debut a new series."
With riders having to pit for fuel approximately every 40
minutes due to the amount allowed, fans were not only treated to
action-packed racing on the track, but also got to witness some
great action in the pits. With 17 leads changes in the
eight-hour, 228-lap race, it was the San Jose BMW team of Brad
Parriott, Stephane Mertens and Nate Kern taking the win by a
margin of 14.856 seconds.
"This is awesome," said Parriott at the end of the race.
"Everything went so smoothly for the entire eight hours. "Our
settings were perfect, tire wear was phenomenal and our times
were in a second of each other. It was definitely a team effort
and the crew was really fantastic."
"This sure was a great event," said three time 250 Grand Prix
Champion Jim Filice. "It was well organized and very
competitive. Unfortunately our bike broke with just about 33
minutes left on the clock. But I plan to be back and am looking
forward to running the series next year."
The 2007 SunTrust MOTO-ST Series will kick off with the Daytona
3-Hour, March 3-4 at Daytona International Speedway and will run
up to eight races at tracks around the country.
"We are excited to be part of this new, professional two-wheel
series," says Craig Kelly, Corporate Executive Vice President,
Chief Marketing Officer, SunTrust Banks, Inc. "The 8 Hours At
Daytona was an outstanding event and we are looking forward to a
long and successful relationship with MOTO-ST."
"We are extremely pleased with the results of the inaugural
SunTrust MOTO-ST," says
Roger Edmondson, President of the Grand American Road Racing
Association, which provides administration and commercial
support for MOTO-ST. "Our goal is to build this series in much
the same method we have used for our Grand American Series and
we our looking forward to a spectacular season in 2007."
