The SunTrust MOTO-ST Series at Iowa Speedway Promises Unsurpassed Two-Wheel Excitement
NEWTON, Iowa (July 12, 2007) -- Iowa Speedway fans will be treated to unsurpassed two-wheel excitement when Round 5 of the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series makes its debut at Iowa Speedway, Saturday, July 14 at 6:30 PM. With just two rounds remaining in this year's series, the action will be fast and furious as teams vie for those all important championship points in this three hour spectacular motorcycle endurance race.
Boasting a full field of top riders from all over the United States, Europe, and Canada, the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series showcases three classes; The Buell Motorcycle Company SuperSport class (SST) which includes motorcycles producing between 90-118 horsepower, the BMW Grand Sport Twins class (GST) covering motorcycles producing 75-90 horsepower and Sport Twins (ST) for machines under 75 horsepower. The skill of the riders coupled with the durability of their machines and the team's ability in the pits will all come into play in this action-packed 500-kilometer event.
And not only will fans be treated to a full field of highly skilled professional team racers, they will also get to view a variety of spectacular machinery, including motorcycles from BMW, Ducati, Buell, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and more.
A win in two-wheeled endurance racing is much tougher than a win in automobile racing. Unprotected by roll bars, yet swapping paint and banging handlebars, these incredible two-wheeled athletes exhibit a unique blend of determination, consistency, smoothness and courage as they jockey for position in one of the most competitive motorsports series in the world.
With just the 8 Hours At Daytona remaining after this weekend, the points at Iowa are all important to each and every team.
Holding down first place in the SST class is Team Aprilia USA 2. Piloted by Ty Howard of Weatherford, Texas and Troy Green of Dallas, this team is looking for their third win of the season, as is the second place team of San Jose BMW. Boasting the talents of Brian Parriott of Calistoga, Calif., Tom Montano of Petaluma, Calif., filling in for Nate Kern, this team sits just 20 points behind Aprilia and are determined to catch the leader. Running in third the Vallely Racing Suzuki. Sponsored by Cycle World Daytona, riders David Loikits of Northhampton, Pa., and Tom Vallely of Flagler Beach, Fla., also want to move up to put them in striking distance for the final round.
In the GST class, Richie Morris Racing leads with 135 points. Showcasing the skills of Shawn Higbee of Oconomonoc, Wis., and Dan Waukesha, Wis., aboard a Buell, they have taken three wins and one third place finish so far this season. Hoping to close the 14 point gap is Touring Sport Ducati with riders Frank Shockley of Greenville., and his co-rider Brad Phillips of Greer, SC. Sitting in third with 116 points is the Buell of James Gang Racing. Sharing rider duties for this team are Paul James of Waukesha. Wis., and Jeff Johnson who hails from Minneapolis. Taking a second last week moved them up and now they want to do it again.
The GST class leader is the Pair-A-Nine team with well known champions Jim Filice and Jay Springsteen aboard a Kawasaki, Holding a 6 point lead, they know it is coming down to the wire and are hoping to gain a higher footing this weekend. Second place is held by GoBigRacing out of Canada. Featuring Ross Millson and Paul Glenn, this duo has ridden their Suzuki to three third place finishes and one second so far. In third, and ready to take another jump forward is Speedwerks.com. also aboard a Suzuki. With Brian Kcraget of Danville, Va., leading the team, they are hoping to add their third win this race.
